Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Noack was appointed professor at Clausthal University of Technology on May 11, 1978.
After completing his education at the Technical University of Braunschweig in the field of mechanical engineering, he began working as a research assistant in the "Friction Research" department at the Max Planck Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen on April 1, 1956. His teacher at the time, Prof. Georg Vogelpohl, shaped his future career, which is essentially linked to the field of "tribology" (friction, wear and lubrication of mechanical engineering components). After Prof. Vogelpohl's retirement, the transfer of the friction research department from Göttingen to Clausthal and its integration into the Clausthal University of Technology as the "Institute for Friction Technology and Machine Kinetics" was prepared and driven forward under the leadership of Prof. Noack.
Despite this heavy workload, he was able to complete his doctorate in engineering at the Clausthal University of Technology in December 1970 with the topic "Load capacity of plain bearings".
He then worked as a research assistant at the Clausthal University of Technology from January 1, 1972. After completing his habilitation at the TUC, he was appointed professor at the Institute for Friction Technology and Machine Kinetics in 1978. Here he continued to work in his field of "tribology".
On his initiative and following his planning, the new institute building was constructed in the early 1980s and the main facilities were transferred from Göttingen to Clausthal.
In the following years of his work, he succeeded in setting up a high-pressure laboratory, in which work was carried out primarily on issues relating to the high-pressure viscosity of lubricants.
Prof. Noack succeeded in continuing the tradition of the Göttingen Institute for Friction Research in Clausthal.
